Join Andalee’s student troupe

Posted on Jun 5, 2012

I am currently auditioning dancers for my student troupe, the Nightingales. This student troupe learns fun Oriental choreographies and benefits from advanced instruction. Community performance opportunities are a plus!

One-on-one auditions will be  scheduled during mutually agreed upon times between June 13 and August 14. Auditions are open to anyone, but would be best for those at an advanced beginner to intermediate level. Weekly rehearsals are every Wednesday night from 7:30-8:30p. For more info about the class fee and structure, visit the class schedule.

To prepare for auditions, please bring this form with you: Student Troupe Audition Form.

What to expect at your audition

Auditions will be held privately at pre-scheduled times. You will be asked to demonstrate your ability to execute specific movements and your ability to pick up combos and choreographies.

First, you will be asked to show competency with basic movements at an advanced beginner to intermediate level. The following moves are:

  1. Hip isolations – hip bumps, slides, figure eights and circles
  2. Hip drops
  3. Shimmies, include a traveling shimmy
  4. Shoulder isolations – shoulder shimmies, shoulder rolls, snake arms
  5. Chest isolations – rib circles, all directions
  6. Basic undulation

You may choose how to interpret the competencies anyway you like, as a  choreography, drill, improvisation or any other format you prefer. I am looking for quality of movement and an understanding of basic belly dance moves. Most of these moves take at least one year to master.

Afterwards, you will be taught a short combination, which I will ask to see you “perform”. I am looking to see if you have the ability to pick up moves, transition and stage presence. Finally, we will have few minutes to get to know each other and ask questions of each other.

I hope to make the auditions as stress-free as possible.  In order to help with this, please arrive at least 5 minutes before your scheduled audition time and bring the filled out audition form. The audition from start to finish will take about 30 minutes from start to finish. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me!
